National Flag Football League of Atlanta | NFFLA | FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be gay?
Not at all.  The NFFLA welcomes everyone over the age of 18.  This was a league created for the LGBTQIA community, however allies are extremely important to our community and are welcome to play.  .

I've never played football, and don't really know much about it. What do I need to do?
Players of all ages, experience and athletic ability are part of the league. Although the games can be competitive, we foster a culture of respect and of helping each other learn and improve their skills. All you need to do is try your best.  In addition to our helpful league mates, we have created two divisions to help our newer, inexperienced players.  The UNITED division is for our more competitive and experienced players.  The FALCON division is for players that are new to football, or maybe our veteran players that need a break from the extreme competitiveness of some UNITED players.  Either way, we make sure there is a space for everyone.

Do I have to be in shape to play?
Our players come in all shapes and sizes. We share an appreciation of the game and the camaraderie of team sport. Not everyone can be a star quarterback, but there is a place for everyone who wants to play. Likewise, those with more experience and athletic ability will be challenged both physically and mentally. If you are looking for motivation to be more active and spend more time outdoors, joining the league is a great way to help you achieve your goals.

How often do teams usually practice?
During the season, teams will typically practice once per week. Communicate with your captain to determine when the best time to practice. Teams work together to make a practice schedule around each other.

What equipment do I need to buy?
There isn't much! During play, we require players to wear drawstring gym shorts that do not have pockets. Of course, you'll want to have good running shoes or cleats. The NFFLA will provide you with a t-shirt/jersey and flags.  Visit www.nffla.com/store and you can order NFFLA branded pocketless shorts.

How many games per season?
We play on Saturday morning/early afternoon. Our teams play a minimum of 7 regular season games and 1 playoff game (all teams go to Playoffs). There is also a pre-season game and a championship game.

What if I can't commit to every practice or game?
We are all busy. Just make sure you let your captain know as soon as you can when you can't make it. If you know you're going to be out of town any weekends for work or vacation, just note that in the schedule conflicts question during the registration process online.

How are the teams put together?
New teams are formed through a draft process each season. New players must attend one of our Open Play/Mini Camp Clinic sessions to meet the captains and other players. At the clinic, you will have an opportunity to learn our rules and run a few plays. You will be informed at the team reveal party shortly after the draft.

If I sign up with a partner/friend, can we play on the same team?
New players to the league can be linked to another new player to guarantee that they will play on the same team for the first year of play.  Linked players are only allowed in the FALCON division, as we've had experience in the past with linked players creating an unfair advantage in league competition.

I am looking forward to meeting some new people, what should I expect?
The league has over 180 players each spring that come from all backgrounds, professions and parts of town. Over the course of the season, you will get to know your teammates very well. The league also sponsors numerous social events each year such as dinners, beer and margarita blasts, and game watching parties. Joining the NFFLA is one of the best ways to get to know new people.

If I have other questions, who can I contact?
